-wool yarn in your color choice
I used Patons Denim-y wool blend, med 4 weight and 3 strands at a time
-Rope. I used 100 ft of clothesline but you could also use nylon rope just make sure you melt the ends of nylon so it does not unravel.
– Hook. I used N-15/10.00mm
-pom pom maker
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
The basket is worked in continuous rounds with 3 strands of yarn held together at a time along with the rope.
Please keep a tight tension when working your rounds so that you do not end up with a overly floppy basket. It will still be relatively “floppy” because it is not wicker but a tight tension is best so that you have a sturdy basket. Pull the rope as your basket progresses to help form the shape.
Make a slip knot with your 3 strands of yarn and rope like so
4 sc onto the rop
Make a U shape and slip stitch into the first sc
Going under the rope, ch 10 into the circle
Pull ends to close the circle and sl st to join. At this point, put in a stitch marker so you know where your rounds begin. I use a bobby pin because that’s just what I have always used but use what you are comfortable with! We will begin with the base.
2sc into each sc (20)
2sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, repeat until the end of the round (30) always ending on a single crochet throughout pattern
2sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (40)
2sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (50)
2sc in first stich, 1sc in next 4 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (60)
2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (70)
2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (80)
2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 7 stitches, repeat until the end of the round (90)
At this point I began working my sides because this is the size base I wanted. If you would like a smaller or larger basket just stop or continue working in this pattern.
now we will work the sides
sc in back loops only (90)
pull the rope slightly to tighten and form rim for your basket.
sc in both loops (90)
Note: While working the sides, pull the rope slightly as you work your way around and form your basket.
continue up the side, sc in each stitch around until you reach the height you would like. Change colors along the way if you wish, I changed colors one strand at a time to create a ombre effect.
Once you reach the height you like, fold the basket in half and mark where you would like the handles. I am all about quick and easy so if you do not like my rebel ways feel free to count and make your handles exact, this just works for me!
For the handles, the size is a personal preference but I will show you how I made mine. once I reached my first stitch marker, I sc 10 stitches around the rope. I skipped 14 stitches and continued along sc in first stitch after second marker. continue like this to form the other handle. Always keeping your rope and yarn together.
once you reach the end of the round, sc around until you reach the handles. You will sc around the handle 10 times. This will create sturdy handles.
once you sc around and return to the beginning marker cut the rope leaving about a inch. You will then simply sc two times to secure the rope into place and then continue to sc around covering the rope. End at the beginning of the first handle. cut your yarn and weave in the ends.
Add Pom Poms to handles for an extra touch!
This basket is also perfect for toys!
