I really wanted a large statement piece to hang behind McKinley’s bed. After some thought, I came up with the idea to do a wall hanging with yarn. Originally I was going to do a macramé hanging but I just could not find the time. This DIY Yarn Wall Art can be done in a hour and achieves the same effect. You can easily customize your wall hanging with the color yarn you choose, size and how you trim the ends.
branch or dowel
Yarn in a variety of colors and textures. Try to get a mixture of thick and thin yarn.
cut a long piece of Jute and tie a knot at one end of your branch or dowel. Wrap the cording several times around the branch. Tuck the long strand of jute through one of the wrapped loops and tie another knot. Do the same for the other side. This really sounds a lot more complicated then it is, do your best and it does not have to be perfect!
Hang your branch or dowel on the wall. Having it hanging makes it much easier to tie your yarn on and you can determine the length you want it to be this way.
Pick which color yarn you would like to start with. Determine the length you would like your wall hanging to be and double that length. I cut 20 strands of the white to start out with because my piece is pretty large but you can start with as many pieces as you would like!
Tie your yarn onto the branch or dowel. Fold your first piece of yarn in half, wrap it around the branch and pull the ends through. Pull tight and secure it where you would like it. Repeat this pattern until you have worked all the way down your branch, switching colors as you go. Be creative and customize it in a way that looks good to you.
I decided to braid the grey strands of yarn, this is totally up to you I just like the way it looks!
I lightly pulled the braided strands to fluff them up a bit!
Trim the ends! I chose a V shape but you can certainly go straight across or zig zag if you would like!
Thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy your DIY Yarn Wall Art!
